The English term conscientization is a translation of the Portuguese term conscientizaeao, which is also translated as" consciousness raising" and critical consciousness. The term was popularized by Brazilian educator, activist and theorist Paulo Freire in his 1970 work Pedagoges of the oppressed.
Conscientization is defined as "learning to perceive social, political and economic contradiction and to take action against the oppressive elements of reality.
Freire believes that part of the purpose of education is to help children develop the ability" to ask good questions ." It help us in our journey towards liberation and freedom through intellectual curiosity.
Freire's educational idea which offer most important contribution to understanding educational practices and discusses their relavance to education and development.
As part of our curriculum we have conducted a conscientization programme in our practicing school , Govt. HSS Ayirooppara, Pothencode on 6th August 2019. As the day we selected for the programme is the Hiroshima Day , we have decided to connect its relevance with our programme.
The team consisted of 11 members and we have planned it a week before. As the current world scenario needs peace education and international awareness we selected the topic " Peaceful Living and International Understanding".
we had conducted a poster making competition, Essay writing competition and a special assembly in the school. We were very happy that as per our instruction students actively involved in the paper crane craft. They made 1001 paper cranes ( sadako cranes) in memory of the Hiroshima Day. we decorated the school walls and pillars with the posters and paper cranes. Later in the afternoon we conducted a survey on the topic of War and Peace in which students enthusiastically participated. After the survey we have conducted a special presentation and a awareness session on the evil effects of war.
The programme was a new experience for all of us.
